Some places leave a mark on you that never quite fades. Bar Harbor, Maine is that place for me — a town I've returned to again and again, drawn back by its salt air, its rocky coastline, and the way the light falls differently there than anywhere else I've ever been.
Distant Harbors was painted from a photo I took on one of those trips — a moment I captured of the Margaret Todd, the beloved four-masted schooner that calls Bar Harbor home. She sits at anchor in the harbor, the dark tree line of one of the wooded Porcupine Islands rising behind her, the water shimmering in that particular shade of blue-green that belongs only to the Maine coast.
Bar Harbor has been the inspiration for many of my paintings, and the Margaret Todd — with her tall masts and quiet dignity — felt like the perfect subject to carry that spirit. This piece is my love letter to a place I return to as often as I can.
